Scottish Winter Fair '10

The atmosphere was electric at the Scottish Winter Fair held in Edinburgh this week where an impressive entry of beef cattle came the scrutiny of judge Alistair Cormack.
Local commercial cattle breeder James Alexander, Toomebridge made the trip across to see how his home bred steer Black Magic¯ would fare with new owner Donald MacPhearson at the halter.
It proved to be a magnificent show for the Jalex bred bullock when he was tapped out winner of the heavy weight steer class en route to laying claim to the Senior Male and Overall Male Championship titles. This proved to be a very popular win as visitors to the event were really impressed with the style and loin of Black Magic when handled.
This win is a dream come true for Jalex as they are absolutely thrilled how their cattle are performing at major fatstock events including the recent Smithfield Show.
James Alexander is toasting success this week following a memorable trip to the legendary "Royal Smithfield Championships" which was held at the East of England Winter Stock Festival at Peterborough Showgrounds recently.
The highlight of the trip was when his home bred Limousin heifer "Shakira" took the top placing in the heifer calf class. This was a fiercely competitive section with the very best calves forward from Scotland, England and Wales.Shakira is sired by Hightown Cassius who was purchased at Carlisle for his super carcass and style. His first calves hit the ground this year and are delighting the Jalex team.
"There is something special about the Cassius calves" states James "They have a real presence in addition to the quality that is required on the show circuit."
This is supported by the demand for them with a number already sold for further showing. Shakira was following her success at the NI Limousin Club Calf Spectacular where she was Reserve Commercial Champion. In addition the Cassius sired steer calf "Dizzy Rascal" has also been snapped up and has been exported to Aberdeenshire.
2010 has been one of the most successful in the show ring for the Jalex team, and has also seen a large number of stock being sold and shown at fat stock events in Kilkenny, Carlisle and now Smithfield. The Jalex herd also bred a first prize winner at Smithfield in 2009 when the Aberdeen Angus heifer "Black Beauty 1" collected the red ribbon.

James Alexander's Jalex commercial show team made quite an impression at the Christmas Show held at Kilrea Mart picking up a string of top prize awards. The mart was overflowing as a massive crowd attended this unique event, held in conjunction with Garvagh YFC. A good entry of super quality fatstock, baby calves and premium lambs came under the hammer of Mark Stewart, auctioneer, with top prices realised for quality stock.
Mr Alan Turnball judged the cattle section of the event. Mr Murray Hardy, Procurement Manager of Scott beef, Bridge of Allen judged the Breed Classes and the lambs, with the Housewives choice been judged by Sam Carmichael, Moneymore.
The cattle section of the event was generously sponsored by the Ulster Bank, with Ann Calwell and Mr Eamon McSorley from the Garvagh Branch in attendance to distribute the awards.

N. I. Aberdeen Angus Calf Show 2010
On only its 2nd year having commercial classes at their annual calf show in December we were over the moon when Jalex bred stock retained away with the Commercial Championship following the success from the same show in 2009.
This heifer has since been sold to Sam Matchett to join BB5 for future showing. We are sure she will come up again.

The hotly contended commercial section at NI Charolais Club event held at Fintona had a fantastic entry forward in all sections.
Hitting the top spot was the very smart Bushmills Lady shown and presented by James Alexander.
Tullygarley Alibaba sired this very correct heifer who has enjoyed great success this summer at local shows.
This is the second year in a row that this show team have won the Commercial Championship at Fintona.
Limousin Calf Spectacular 2010
There was a small but quality entry entry a this years Limousin calf show in Moira.
We had a nice line of calves on show ourselves and recieved Overall Reserve Commercial Champion with Shakira, our Hightown Cassius sired heifer.
This was a great result for Shakira who was only 3 Months old on the show day. This little heifer is showing great promise.

It was a case if "all hands in deck" at the recent Commercial Show held at Moira with 14 cattle loaded up representing the Jalex team.
The show attracted perhaps the best standard of cattle ever presented, and was a real credit to members of the NI Commercial Cattle Club.
The Jalex team had a great day in the show ring collecting an array of prizes including three breed championships, one reserve championship, runner up in the pairs and top placed steer in the midweight section.
All cattle were home bred with our sires Ross Willie, Tullygarley Alibaba and Hightown Cassius again having great results.

Another shuffle of the show team resulted in success for the Jalex crew at the recent Clogher Valley and Enniskillen Shows where the commercial classes were top notch.
Bushmills Lady owned jointly with McAfee’s was looking every inch a champion and picked up the top place in the store heifer class before winning the Clogher Valley Commercial Cattle Championship. In reserve position was her team mate “Moulin Rouge” who had earlier stormed to victory in the beef heifer section of the show.
The calf, store and beef classes then went head to head for the Overall Commercial Championships which saw the Alibaba sired Bushmills Lady secure the reserve spot.
Enniskillen Show had a great entry forward and we were delighted to pick up the Reserve Male Championship with “Black Magic”.

James Alexander’s commercial show team continued its winning streak at Castlewellan Show at the weekend where there was a terrific entry forward in all classes. This is the third championship in a row for the Toomebridge based Jalex herd, following on from top placings at Armagh and Omagh shows.
The Champion exhibit was the flashy "Moulin Rouge". A half share has been sold in this heifer following on from her show debut for the Jalex herd at the weekend. She will be shown in Moira in August before joining the herd as a breeding heifer.
The success story didn’t end there with Jalex also securing the reserve championship with "Chunky", who was sired by Ross Willie.

We received Overall Commercial Champion at Omagh show this year with Bushmills Lady.
Lady also went on to be Reserve Supreme Beef Interbreed Champion of the show.
This was the first time that a Commercial animal of ours was allowed to enter for the Interbreed and it was a great honour to walk away with Reserve.
We also received 3rd in the Interbreed pairs with Flash.
This is our second year in a row winning Omagh show, last year we won it with our Limousin heifer OH BE GEES.

We made our 2010 showing season debut on Saturday the 15 June at Armagh show, and were well rewarded getting Champion Commercial with Lady and Reserve Champion Commercial with Flash, both Tullygarley Alibaba sired heifers.
These pair also went onto to pick up Reserve Champion Interbreed Pairs.
Our Alibaba Heifer Wide Load also was selected for the Uster Bank Suckler Replacement Final to be held in Moira in August.
